London
Katie on August 1st, 2008
On August 11, Bloomsbury in England will start selling the book in the U.K. This might have piqued the interest of producers at the BBC sufficiently to interview me on the Today Programme. Since I’m in England anyway, it made sense to do the interview sooner rather than later. So yesterday I ventured out to the vast BBC complex to talk briefly — and I mean ever so briefly — about the book.
The host was James Naughtie, who knows a lot about Gould in particular and music in general. We managed to cover a lot of ground in three minutes!
Hi Katie,
I’m living in Amsterdam and after reading a review of your book I ordered it immediately. I’m enjoying it quite a lot, specially after reading “Piano: the making of a concert grand” and watching “Note by Note.” It adds more mystery to the reasons of why Glenn Gould was so fascinated about his own piano.
If you are still in London, you might find “Stradivarius: Five Violins, One Cello and a Genius” by Toby Faber; the red violin is in London, so you can enjoy it as well.
Thanks for such a good time reading your book,
Daniel
Daniel,
So nice of you to write. I’m glad you’re enjoying the book.
Yes, Glenn Gould and his obsession with his instruments is a topic of enduring fascination. I was surprised, when I embarked on the book, that no one had thought to look into this aspect of the musician.
Please keep me posted on how you’ve liked the book once you finish it.
All best,
Katie
Thanks for your reply Katie, sure I’ll write to you about the book once I finish it –although I have the feeling that like at the end in “Note by Note,” I don’t want it to finish…
Greetings,
Daniel
Hi Katie,
I have a small “L” literary website directed toward book groups and book lovers. I also run a village book group in Whistler called WHISTLER READS and we have selected ROMANCE ON THREE LEGS for our November 6th, 2008 book discussion. I am interested to see if you could do a telephone interview with me for podcast on our site, and for use at the book discussion that evening. It takes aprox 20 minutes to go over 6-8 questions. As well I wonder whether your publicist would be able to forward us some promotional copies which I use to promote the event and gain new members.
Some stats on http://www.bookbuffet.com
We get >1.5M hits annually. The podcasts are RSS and featured on the site as well as about a dozen syndicated sites, so great exposure.
Whistler Reads has close to 500 registered members and we try to bring the author to speak whenever possible. As I see from your blog you are in the UK – this latter prospect seems unlikely. Whistler is a mountain resort community located 2 hrs from Vancouver, BC. We are the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Here is our feature article about you,
Best,

We are discussing your excellent book in our next book club meeting.
If convenient, perhaps I could e-mail you.
Sincerely
Christopher Maule
Hello, I watched your google talk and you began to tell an anecdote about watching gould’s outtakes from the Goldberg variations film. You cut yourself off and I was left wondering. Where were you able to view these!? Iwould love to see those outtakes. thanks -Brian.
